An Absolute Crap Ton!

Hello Nerdfighters! I just finished listening to this week's episode of Dear Hank and John , Episode 130: The LaCroix Boix , and there is one particular conversation that I have not been able to stop thinking about. The conversation was spurred by a seemingly simple question from Anna that began like this... "Dear Hank and John, how much sand is there?" Hank and John Green then dove into quantifying the amount of sand on Earth by comparing it to the number of stars in the universe. In fact, John says that there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on Earth. As pointed out by Hank, this seems to have been paraphrased from the Carl Sagan quote: "The total number of stars in the universe is greater than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the planet Earth." Granted, this is no actual number, but it seems to be one of the only ways we can actually describe this quantity in a way that makes any sort of sense. However, John went on to res

80 Percenting: The Finale!

Hello Nerdfighters! If you missed my last post, 80 Percenting: Putting it To The Test! , you might want to go check it out before continuing here. This post is a part 2 to my 80 percenting adventure. As a quick recap, last week I shared my experiences of "80 percenting" things in my daily life. This inspiration came from Episode 101: Knit Like a Mofo of  Dear Hank and John . More specifically, in the pod Hank Green made the suggestion that the first 80% of the effort is only 20% of the work, while the last 20% is 80% of the work. In order to test this out, I shared with you 4 instances of implementing this philosophy in my life, but I sort of left you hanging on the last one. I apologize, but I was only following Hank's advice and that meant I could only post 80% of my work. But, the time has come! Here's my fifth and final attempt (well... sixth if you count 80 percenting the blog) at putting in 80% of the effort into my daily chores. _____________________

80 Percenting: Putting it To The Test!

Hello Nerdfighters! I was recently listening to some episodes of Dear Hank and John  from late 2017 and I came across a particularly brilliant conversation. In  Episode 101: Knit Like a Mofo  (one of my personal favorite pod titles), Hank and John Green discuss the concept of "80 percenting". This conversation happens in the first few minutes of the pod when John was discussing how much effort he was putting into finishing the edits on his yet-to-be-released novel Turtles All The Way Down.  Here's Hank's response: "John, do you know about 80 percenting?... 80 percenting is the idea that the first 80 percent of the work is actually only 20 percent of the work and the last 20 percent is like 80 percent of the work. So getting 80 percent of the way there is 20 percent and then getting the last 20 percent is like 80 percent of the work. And so what you should do is just forget about that last 20 percent." Okay. That was complicated, Hank. I'm going to

Like a Centaur, But For Snakes!

Hello Nerdfighters! I was listening to the most recent episode of the pod, Episode 129: The Worst Guest Books , and I came across a conversation that I feel needs to be discussed further. In this episode, Hank and John Green were answering a question from Brea about the structure of a snake's digestive system, and in true Dear Hank and John  fashion, the conversation devolved into a discussion of the existence of humanoid snakes. It went something like this... John begun like so:  "I've got an image in my head right now of a snake, but it has semi-normal arms and legs and it walks upright. It's really freaking me out pretty bad...It has human arms and legs, but snake sized." To which, John elaborated more: "What we haven't yet invented is a humanoid snake, Like a centaur, but for snakes." And finally, Hank had a revelation: "Well if its a centaur for snakes, then it's got a human body that sticks up out of the snake. It's a
